Let us continue transformation programmes, Jonathan tells voters
President Goodluck Jonathan has promised more development for the people of Kaduna State if re-elected for a second term in the Feb. 14 presidential election.
I’ll overhaul Nigeria’s economy, says Buhari
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, General Muhammad Buhari (rtd), on Saturday pledged to overhaul the economy of the country for a better Nigeria, if elected President on 14 February.
We will not rig elections, says David Mark
Senate President David Mark has said the Federal Government under President Goodluck Jonathan was determined to ensure free and fair elections in the country.
Jonathan will beat Buhari in the north – PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said its presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan would defeat APC candidate, retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, in the northern part of the country in the February 14 presidential poll.
Presidency, PDP must stop funding election postponement, says APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed the statement by the Presidency/Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that they are not behind the ongoing campaign for next month’s general elections to be shifted, saying both must now back up their words with action by cutting off the funding for the surreptitious campaign immediately.
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said having seen that the election-shift campaign has been rejected by Nigerians, the Presidency and the PDP have wisely backed away from it, that is if they can be trusted to mean what they say.
However, it called on all Nigerians, as well as local and international observers who have started arriving for the elections, to closely monitor developments as the elections approach, because the Presidency and the PDP have proven time and again that their words are not their bond.
However, it called on all Nigerians, as well as local and international observers who have started arriving for the elections, to closely monitor developments as the elections approach, because the Presidency and the PDP have proven time and again that their words are not their bond.
“Election is a process, not a one-day affair. That is why we are delighted that some foreign observers have already arrived for the Feb. 14th and 28th polls. Now they must pay a very close attention to the preparations for the elections, the relentless campaign to shift the polls, including through the use of pseudo analysts and the sponsorship of a rash of court cases seeking to stop the presidential candidate of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, at all cost.
“We know their last joker is the court, amid the unpleasant rumours that a pliable Judge has been procured with millions of dollars to disqualify our candidate. But we strongly believe that the judiciary will do all that is possible to keep its integrity intact and not be a party to desperate efforts to scuttle the elections and trigger a constitutional crisis,” APC said.
The party also called on local and international observers to take note of the threats of violence emanating from a section of the country ahead of the elections.
“The ex-militants from the Niger Delta have openly threatened the very existence of the country if President Goodluck Jonathan fails to win the forthcoming presidential election. The implication is that, as far as they are concerned, the votes of the people do not count and elections are won by fiat. This is a recipe for violence and disaster,” it said.
APC said even though the Presidency and the PDP have belatedly distanced themselves from the threats, their disclaimer is as tepid as it is unreliable, since they are the unseen hands behind the threats
anyway.
anyway.
“This is why we are calling for vigilance from all stakeholders in the next few days before the February 14th and 28th elections. We must not allow desperate politicians to plunge our nation into chaos. Elections are not war, but a celebration of democracy. There will always be winners and losers, hence no one should threaten others if he or she loses,” the party said.
Elections are Satanic, Jehovah’s Witness Asks Members Not To Vote
As Nigerians prepare to elect new leaders that will run the affairs of the country in the next four years, members of Jehovah’s Witness have been banned from participating in the electoral process and by implication, they are forbidden from voting for any candidate or contesting in any election. They claimed that participating in an election was satanic and contrary to God’s commandment.
P.M.NEWS findings revealed that members of Jehovah’s Witness were warned not to obtain voter’s cards and that they should not vote during the elections. The directive was not a mere order as any member found participating or voting during the elections will be excommunicated. When reporters spoke to some of the members who confirmed the directive, they claimed that the order was right because they are still waiting for the kingdom of God that is yet to be establshed on earth.
A minister in the congregation, James Uduok, explained that every member of Jehovah’s Witness knows that participating in election is satanic and contrary to the will of God. Uduok said that the teaching of the Witness was strongly embedded in the Bible and all members must adhere strictly to the teaching or leave the congregation.

PDP calls for calm after tribunal’s verdict favours APC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on its members to remain calm and committed to winning the forthcoming general elections
This was contained in a statement issued by Alhaji Hassan Saba, Public Relations Officer of PDP in Niger State in Minna on Friday.
The statement followed the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal’s verdict nullifying the election of Nuhu Zagbayi (PDP) in favour of David Umaru of APC on January 30.
NAN recalls that a bye-election was held in August 2014 in which Zagbayi was declared winner.
The statement said PDP was studying the judgment.
“PDP remains the winning party. The judgment will make the party more determined to win the forthcoming general elections across the country.
“We call on our teeming supporters to remain calm. The judgment has further motivated us to work harder to harness established electoral fortunes of the PDP.
“We are not deterred, we have been victorious, and we will always remain committed to sustain our victories in the state since 1999.
“I call on our party faithful to collect their voter cards before the general elections.
“You must your voter cards to elect PDP candidates across all elective positions especially the zone B senatorial candidate,” it added.
Presidential debate: APC is protecting Buhari from bashing, says PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of unnecessarily shielding its Presidential Candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari from an open debate.
APC announced the withdrawal of its candidate from the debate usually organised at election year by Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) on account of “lack of fairness.”
Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Director of Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.
According to him, the withdrawal of the party is to shield “Buhari’s intellectual laziness and inability to constructively engage contemporary national issues on live television and radio.”
Fani-Kayode said “the APC knows Buhari will flunk it if he is subjected to the rigours of debate on issues of national governance and development.”
He, however, added that the PDP Campaign Orgnaisation had envisaged that the APC would be reluctant to expose Buhari to the rigours of such debate.
He said the organisation was aware that the APC had expressed concern when approached by an international news channel for a debate.
According to him, the APC has assured the news channel that it would only be comfortable with its Vice Presidential Candidate, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to participate, instead.
He maintained that if the APC truly believed it was a party of progressive intellectuals as it claimed, it should allow Buhari to prove that at the debate.
“Should the APC fail to participate in the debate, it would also show the disdain both the party and its candidate has for Nigerians,” he said.
According to him, the party’s absence would deny Nigerians the opportunity to demand Buhari to account for his actions while in public office.
He held that “Buhari does not have what it takes to sustain a coherent argument on germane issues of governance and national development.
“We challenge Buhari to a debate on any national and international medium of mass communication and our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, will participate.
“Jonathan’s running mate, Vice President Namadi Sambo, is also ready to participate in the debate and any other debate,” the statement quoted Fani-Koyode as saying.
He maintained that Jonathan and his running mate were well-rounded intellectuals who had been prepared by their experience in office to answer any question on governance at any debate.
NAN recalls that the APC had accused the organisers of the debate of unhidden bias against its corporate political interest.
Akwa Ibom will vote PDP en masse – Akpabio
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom has promised the national leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that his state would vote the party 100 per cent in the forthcoming elections.
Akpabio made the promise while addressing the PDP presidential campaign in in Uyo on Friday.
He assured that President Goodluck Jonathan that no amount of propaganda would prevail against him.
“In Akwa Ibom, we will give you 1.67 million votes as valentine gift. Nigeria will not go backward. In the midst of distraction, you have done well in human empowerment, transportation, education and agriculture.
“You have proved that you read to Ph.D level by your action. Education matters,” Akpabio said.
The South-South Coordinator of PDP presidential campaign organisation, Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River, said Jonathan administration had moved Nigeria forward.
Imoke said PDP governors in the South-South zone had performed creditably well and would deliver PDP in the coming elections.
He assured the president that he would win the zone massively.
Dr Amadu Ali, the Director-General, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, called on Akwa Ibom people to drive away any party that was not PDP.
“PDP has done very well. Goodluck has refurbished the moribund railway and undertaken educational reforms,” Ali said.
He urged the people to keep faith with PDP in order to benefit from agriculture that would be the target of revenue generation for the next administration.
The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, told women that PDP was the answer to their problems.
She said that the incoming PDP government would give women 50 per cent appointive offices, having fulfilled 35 per cent earlier.
Jonathan urged the women to have faith that the next governor of Akwa Ibom would carry them along.
“Be prepared to follow Goodluck and Sambo on February 14, our valentine day,” Jonathan said.
INEC urges eligible voters to collect their PVCs
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged registered voters in Kano state to go to Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) distribution centres in wards across the state to collect their cards.
The commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Alhaji Minkaila Abdullahi, made the call in an interview with NAN in Kano on Saturday.
Minkaila said that the distribution of the cards had been on in the state and advised the voters yet to collect their cards, including those who registered recently, to quickly do so before the elections.
“Since the commencement of the distribution of the PVCs, the record we have showed that there are many people that are yet to collect their cards at the various distribution centres.
“Recently, the commission extended the distribution of the cards from local government level to ward centres for easy collection of the card by members of the public.
“Also, the commission has extended the time for the collection of the cards from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.,” he said.
He therefore called on eligible voters to go to the centres where they were registered to collect their cards, adding that cards for all newly-registered voters were ready.
According to him, the commission had already taken a decision that only those with their permanent voter cards would be allowed to vote during the elections.
Nigerian Army Officers Write Open Letter To President Jonathan, Urges President Obama To Intervene
A group of Nigerian Army officers involved in operations against Islamist insurgents tagged “Operation Zaman Lafiya” have written an open letter detailing a series of problems bedeviling their military operations.
The officers called on President Goodluck Jonathan to investigate massive looting of funds meant for military operations. They also urged President Barack Obama of the United States and United Nations Secretary General Banki Moon to put pressure on Mr. Jonathan to engage in fighting a more focused war on Islamist terror.
In the open letter titled “State of Operations In The North East As Observed By Some Concerned Officers,” the officers said:
1. We the concerned officers participating in the North East Operation Zaman Lafiya do resolve to write this letter for the following reasons:
a. To save our country Nigeria.
b. To stop the bloodshed of innocent officers, soldiers and civilians in the North East.
c. To appeal to the president of the United State of America Mr. Barrack Obama, United Nation Secretary General Mr. Banki Moon and other world leaders to as quickly as important to intervene and urge President Goodluck Jonathan to do the needful in addressing the issue of insurgency in Nigeria especially in the North East.
2. As members of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is our responsibility to defend our country Nigeria which we are ever ready to do so as the call arises. But firstly, the civil authority has the first responsibility to equip us effectively to enable us to carry out such task. This is common practice all over the world. As professional officers and soldiers, we did not want to go public with details of our frustrations concerning this operation because doing so will boast the moral[e] of our enemy. But the persistent neglect of our plight made us to do otherwise.
3. It is well known fact that of recent, a commanding officer from this theater of operation wrote a letter to our President intimating him of a few out of numerous problems affecting us in this operation which we believe Mr. President will address. It appears Mr. President has chosen to ignore it because none of his relations are among us. In this 21st century, how can an accused [be] a judge of his own case? That letter clearly exposed the rot within the military authorities concerning this operation. This is because, the Army authority that was accused of poor administration in that letter, set up a kangaroo investigation that harass[ed], intimidate[d], and forced the officer to deny the authorship of the letter.
4. We authoritatively learned that, the Army authority succeeded in forcing the officer to deny the letter through the Provost Marshal (Army) who happen[ed] to be of the same tribe with the officer concern[ed]. For President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore such kind of allegation made us to believe the rumor going round that he has a hand or knowledge in the so-called Boko Haram. We are also aware of how the funds meant for these operations are being looted through the office of the Chief of Training and Operations, Major General J.A.H. Ewansiha. Despite our strong [belief] in democracy, we condemn a democratic government that condones corruption, especially in its military. The President is reported to always turn a blind eye to issues of corruption. For instance, the ADC to Mr.President is presently one of the richest officers in the army. He owns properties in choice places all over the country and even abroad. We are going to make public details of his wealth and assets at the appropriate time.
5. We are appealing to all well meaning Nigerians and leaders of International Community to please speak out with loud voice in [order] to make President Jonathan to constitute an independent high-powered committee to investigate the content of that letter written to him by the commanding officer. Should this request be ignored, the resultant consequence could only be imagined.
6. We stand bold to state that we are speaking the minds of all the officers and soldiers in Operation Zaman Lafiya.

Most entertainers run after politicians because of poverty - Saidi Balogun
In an interview with Encomium magazine this week, actor Saidi Balogun said the reason entertainers run away after politicians is because of poverty - please read what he said, I think I'm tempted to agree with him on some aspects
"(Poverty), that's why you see some of our people running helter-skelter, campaigning for all these politicians. But there's one question we have all not asked, and that's what makes American artists donate to politicians while the actors here in Nigeria are asking from politicians. Every member of the National Assembly has not made an reasonable law on piracy which has devoured the industry. So, there's poverty in the industry. If there's not, you won't see our people flocking around all these politicians, campaigning, singing and dancing for them. I saw a candidate being surrounded by some of our colleagues; I now said to myself, 'if this man eventually wins, how many actors or musicians will he remember? Although some are doing it to make ends meet. And it's sad because we're stars. I think we're supposed to be worshiped, not worshiping others. Even if a governor holds your hand, he's supposed to be happy. But now, the reverse is the case.

Soludo Scores Jonathan ‘F9’ On Economy
Professor Charles Soludo, a former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria and one of the key managers of the Nigerian economy under former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday advised President Goodluck Jonathan not to campaign on his six years record in office as he had failed Nigerians.
In a widely circulated write up on Sunday, the former CBN Governor said the Jonathan administration has failed to take advantage of high oil prices enjoined for the greater part of his time in office to improve the economy and the lot of Nigerians, scoring ‘F9’ in the economic sector.
While disagreeing with those who said President Jonathan had outperformed all his predecessors, Soludo said President Jonathan’s record, especially as in regard to the management of the economy when measured by variables like income (GDP growth rate), stability of prices (inflation and exchange rate), unemployment rate, poverty rate, etc is actually worse than that of former President Obasanjo.
“My advice to President Jonathan and his handlers is to stop wasting their time trying to campaign on his job record. Those who have decided to vote for him will not do so because he has taken Nigeria to the moon. His record on the economy is a clear ‘F’ grade.
“As one reviews the laundry list of micro interventions the government calls its achievements, one wonders whether such list is all that the government could deliver with an unprecedented oil boom and an unprecedented public debt accumulation.
“I can clearly see why reasonable people are worried. Everywhere else in the world, government performance on the economy is measured by some outcome variables such as: income (GDP growth rate), stability of prices (inflation and exchange rate), unemployment rate, poverty rate, etc. On all these scores, this government has performed worse than its immediate predecessor— Obasanjo regime.
“If we appropriately adjust for oil income and debt, then this government is the worst in our history on the economy. All statistics are from the National Bureau of Statistics.”
Going into specifics, the former CBN Governor noted that despite presiding over the biggest oil boom in Nigeria’s history, the Jonathan administration failed to add even one percentage point to the growth rate of GDP compared to the Obasanjo regime especially the 2003- 07 period.
“Obasanjo met GDP growth rate at 2% but averaged 7% within 2003- 07. The current government has been stuck at 6% despite an unprecedented oil boom. Income (GDP) growth has actually performed worse, and poverty escalated,” he added even as he claimed that the Jonathan administration is the only government in Nigeria’s history where rapidly increasing government expenditure was associated with increasing poverty.
“The director general of NBS stated in his written press conference address in 2011 that about 112 million Nigerians were living in poverty. Is this the record to defend?” Soludo noted that while President Barack Obama of the United States had a tough time in his re-election in 2012 because unemployment reached 8%, the unemployment in Nigeria currently under Jonathan is at “a record 24% and poverty at an all-time 71% but people are prancing around, gloating about ‘performance’.
“As I write, the Naira exchange rate to the dollar is N210 at the parallel market. What a historic performance! Please save your breathe and save us the embarrassment.”
Soludo also added that Jonathan’s economic team led by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is “very weak, dominated by self-interested and self-conflicted group of traders and businessmen, and so-called economic team meetings have been nothing but showbiz time.”
According to him, some cabals have taken over the commanding heights of the Nigerian economy. “The very people government exists to regulate have seized the levers of government as policymakers and most government institutions have largely been “privatized’ to them.
“Mention any major government department or agency and someone will tell you whom it has been ‘allocated’ to, and the person subsequently nominates his minion to occupy the seat. “What do you then expect? The economy seems to be on auto pilot, with confusion as to who is in charge, and government largely as a constraint. There are no big ideas, and it is difficult to see where economic policy is headed to,” said the former CBN Governor who added that if properly managed, Nigeria’s economy should have been growing at an annual rate of about 12% given the oil boom, and poverty and unemployment should have fallen dramatically over the last five years.
“The economy roared to average yearly growth of 7% between 2003 and 2007 (although average monthly oil price under his regime was $38), and poverty dropped from estimated 70% in1999 to 54% in 2004. “Obasanjo was his own coordinating minister of the economy and chairman of the economic management team— which he chaired for 90 minutes every week. I met with him daily. In other words, he did not outsource economic management.
“We expected that the next government after Obasanjo would take the economy to the next level. So far, we have had two great slogans: the 7-point agenda and currently, the transformation agenda. They remain empty slogans without content or direction,” said the former CBN Governor.
He also accused the presidential candidates of APC and President Jonathan of promising Nigerians what they cannot deliver because of the reduction in the revenue accruing to the country as a result of the fall in oil price.
Soludo tasked the two leading presidential candidates to come up with financing plans for the various welfare programmes they have been promising Nigerians on their campaign trails ahead of the 2015 elections.
